Considering a career as a supply teacher and wondering about the process of joining a supply teaching agency? This comprehensive step-by-step guide, offers advice on what to consider when choosing a supply teaching agency and a walkthrough of our application process:
Embarking on the journey of joining an supply teaching agency is an exciting step toward new opportunities. At Apple A Day, we understand the uniqueness of each candidate, and we’re here to guide you through our friendly and professional application process.
Research and Choose Wisely
Before diving into the process, take the time to research different agencies. Consider factors such as their commitment to Safer Recruitment in Education, membership in reputable groups like APSCo and REC, and inclusion in the Supply Teacher Framework. Ask about pay, support and who you would be dealing with in the office (do they understand education?). Finding the right fit ensures a smooth and satisfying experience for both parties.
Our Application Process: A Snapshot
Step 1: Supply Teaching Application
Our journey together starts with your application. Unlike a mere registration, it’s an opportunity for us to understand your needs and ensure that we can meet them effectively. Complete our application form, detailing your full career history, qualifications, and any gaps. Please note that legally, for adhoc supply teaching and contract, we cannot just accept a CV (although these are useful to have in addition to your application form). Our form can be found on our website.
Step 2: Phone Call
Expect a friendly call from our team to get to know you better. This conversation is a chance for you to ask questions and for us to confirm that we can assist you. Feel free to reach out to us before filling out the application if you have any queries.
Step 3: Interview
The next step is an interview where we delve deeper into your skills, experience, and preferences. We’ll discuss your willingness to travel, preferred year groups, and more. As part of our commitment to Keeping Children Safe, we’ll also include a short exercise on Prevent and Safeguarding to gauge your understanding.
Step 4: Document Check
Following the interview, we’ll ensure all necessary documents are in place for compliance. This includes ID, proof of address, qualifications, training records, and references. If needed, we may initiate a new DBS check (we can only accept DBS checks on the update service or completed by Apple A Day- this is a legal requirement we must follow). Our team will keep you informed during this process, and you’re welcome to check in at any time. The processing time for DBS checks typically ranges from 1 day to 2 weeks on average after submission, and unfortunately, it’s beyond our control. It is worth you letting your referees know that once they complete your reference, you can start working (sometimes we find that references can hold peoples start dates up, although we do chase them too!). You will also need to sign a contract, KID document and health declaration.
Step 5: Welcome
Once you’re fully compliant, we’ll reach out to let you know you’re ready to start. You’ll receive a welcome pack, link to our app, a name badge, and everything necessary to kickstart your journey with us. We will also need you to complete your new starter form as ALL of our candidates are PAYE directly through us.
Step 6: Relationships
At Apple A Day, we value our relationships. Expect regular check-ins and the flexibility to reach out whenever needed. We offer bespoke training and mentorship, so don’t hesitate to express your interest.
Staying Compliant Together
To ensure ongoing compliance, we’ll need your cooperation. Notify us of any changes in your name or address and provide original proof. Additionally, annual updates for Safeguarding training and staying on the DBS update subscription are crucial legal requirements that we’ll guide you through.
Joining an supply teaching or education agency is not just a process; it’s a collaborative journey. At Apple A Day, we’re here to support you every step of the way. If you’re ready to take the plunge, we can’t wait to welcome you aboard!
